Our Family Lunch Experience at Chowking SM City Fairview

September 29, 2025

We revisited Chowking after a disappointing experience and rediscovers its flavorful chao fan, siomai, fried chicken, & comforting wanton noodles.

I had a not-so-good experience with Chowking about two years ago when I ordered the wanton noodle soup and siopao bola-bola via GrabFood. I was craving noodle soup at that time, but the wanton soup that I ordered was flavorless. It was like sipping boiled water with noodles and dumplings. I had to check the paper bag twice if it had separate seasonings, but there wasn’t any, as such, I just added some salt, soy sauce, and chili garlic sauce so that I could sip the soup. I told this story to Mommy Khris, and I even said, “Bumaba na talaga ang quality ng Chowking.”

Fast forward to a few months after that, and we had our usual family weekend bonding at SM City Fairview, and we were looking for a restaurant to eat lunch. We know that Chowking had good fried chicken, that was why we decided to give it a chance again.

Aside from the fried chicken meal for the kids, we ordered chao fan with siomai, yang chow with siomai, chicharap, and wanton noodle soup. We also ordered flavored buchi for takeout. The food actually looked (and smelled) good when they arrived. Upon seeing the crunchy chicharap, the children started to munch on these appetizers. They also loved the crispy skin of the fried chicken.

As for Mommy Khris and I, we found the yang chow and the chao fan to be bursting with flavor. Both food items were still awesome, and actually brought back some nostalgic memories when the popularity of Chowking flavored rice in a box was at its peak. The chao fan rice was really good, together with the steamed siomai.

I was also happy to note that the wanton noodle soup was delicious. It wasn't like the flavorless liquid that was delivered to me via GrabFood. It was still the same comforting noodle dish that I remember.

At the end of our meal, I was just happy to realize that Chowking, a beloved Filipino fast food restaurant throughout the years, still served food that is delicious and of high quality. It’s the food that we remember enjoying during our youth, and that our children can also appreciate.
