Wordless Wednesday: El Berguedà (Catalonia, Spain)


Located in Catalonia, Spain, El Berguedà is situated in the foothills of the Catalan Pyrenees, only one hour by car from the city of Barcelona. Despite its proximity to the bustling city of Barcelona, El Berguedà is like an entirely different world.

El Berguedà is part of the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park, which has peaks of up to 2600 meters. Here, you can marvel at diverse wildlife roaming around the area such as roe deer, bearded vultures, and majestic eagles. Indeed, If your idea of adventure is being close to nature, then you should definitely include El Berguedà in your travel itinerary to Spain.

Moreover, El Berguedà boasts a network of footpaths covering some 2000 kilometers that has been created especially for walking or cycling. There are also various long routes that cross the area, such as the Camí dels Bons Homes which follows the route used by the Cathars in the Middle Ages to escape from the south of France, or the Cavalls del Vent, a circular route connecting eight mountain shelters.

Apart from communing with nature, some of the other things that you can do while on a holiday at El Berguedà would be a visit to the Pedraforca Astronomical Center since the skies of El Berguedà are particularly clear due to its location in the mountains, far away from any big cities.

At the same time, you can also take the opportunity to discover El Berguedà’s incredible history and cultural legacy. It has fascinating museums dedicated to its mining past, textile factories, and migration to the colonies.

El Berguedà also hosts festivities that have been celebrated for centuries, such as Fia-Faia or La Patumin the city of Berga, declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Of course, you also have to try local products like cheese and jam when you are in the area.
