Wordless Wednesday: The Health Benefits Of Butterfly Pea Flower

July 06, 2022

The butterfly pea flower may be known for its attractive deep blue hue but it's also regarded for its many health benefits.

I’ve always found the deep blue color of the butterfly pea flower to be striking. Whenever there is a Butterfly Pea flower in a garden, I can’t help but be drawn by its vivid hues. Butterfly pea flowers come from the Clitoria ternate plant; yes, that’s the name because the flowers resemble the human female genitals. The plant is also known by its other names: Asian pigeonwings, blue pea, or Darwin pea.

Wordless Wednesday: The Health Benefits Of Butterfly Pea Flower

Butterfly pea is present in many Asian dishes. It’s used for making blue rice, herbal infusions, and cocktails, to name a few. Butterfly pea is also added to salads and even smoothies.

Anyway, some months ago, a relative planted a Butterfly Pea in our garden. I thought that it was just a perennial vine but I was surprised when it grew and flourished because the stem and branches looked woody.

I knew that butterfly pea is regarded for its health-giving benefits but it was only after doing some research that I found out what those exact health advantages. Here are some of those:

  • Promotes healthy skin and hair because of its high antioxidant content
  • Possibly aids in weight reduction
  • Lowers blood sugar level

Take note though that further studies are needed to validate the health benefits of butterfly pea flowers.

How do we use butterfly pea at home? We mainly use butterfly pea as an herbal infusion. We pick one to three pieces of butterfly pea flowers, wash them with water, put it in a mug, and steep them in freshly boiled water until the blue pigment is extracted.

We don’t usually add any sugar or milk to this infusion but I was able to try it with a few pieces of sliced ginger when my throat was a little sore.

Butterfly pea flower is generally flavorless so drinking it is similar to consuming any other mild herbal infusion.
