Learn how to cook delicious and satisfying chicken tacos in this post.
Chicken Tacos are flavorful yet lighter alternative if you are not so keen on using ground beef. It yields the same satisfying taste with a burst of freshness and crunch from the raw vegetables. I like to do chicken tacos as a
side dish to my
salmon and sausage pasta. I find this as a flexible dish because if you do not like to use taco shells, you can opt to use pita wraps or lettuce leaves.
The Best Chicken Tacos
Traditional taco
Taco, as we all know, is a Mexican dish made of sliced or shredded beef, pork,
chicken, organ meats, and even seafood. However, traditional taco uses larger cuts of meat and rolled in a soft corn tortilla wrap. It does not use the crunchy shell that we all know of, which is most common in the USA and other parts of the world. The version of taco in a crunchy shell is what I also call the fast-food version.
The common herbs used to flavor the meats are cumin and oregano, while spices like garlic, chili, and pepper are used to further enhance the taste. The meat can be topped with cheese, sliced cabbage or lettuce, onions, tomatoes,
cilantro or coriander, guacamole, and salsa. Lime juice may be splashed on top right before serving.
My chicken taco version
I make my chicken taco version in two ways – using traditional herbs,
seasonings, and spices or using a ready taco mix if I want it fast and
easy.
I am going to teach you the quick version but if you want to follow the traditional version, prepare one teaspoon each of the cumin, ground oregano,
crushed black pepper, and minced garlic, and some salt for seasoning. Just add them to the chicken meat as you cook.
Here are the ingredients that I use:
- A kilo of ground chicken
- 40 grams of McCormick taco mix
- Medium-sized head of lettuce, grated
- Two large white onions, chopped
- Two large tomatoes, chopped
- One whole cilantro, chopped
- Six pieces of taco shells
- Grated cheese
- One large lemon or lime, sliced
- A tablespoon of cooking oil
The kitchen equipment that you will need is a frying pan, a frying spatula,
and a spoon.
Start by washing the ground chicken in clean water. Once the chicken is clean,
heat the oil in the frying pan and add the chicken. Let the chicken cook until the meat turns white. At this point, you can already add the seasonings or the taco mix. Adjust the taste to your liking.
When the chicken meat is cooked, transfer it in a serving bowl. Arrange the toppings in individual bowls. You can serve it by placing the chicken meat in the taco shells and adding the toppings. Another option is to let your family assemble their own tacos for a more fun dining experience.
Aside from chicken meat, you can also use ground pork, fish fillets, and shrimps. You can also opt to grill the meat and seafood for deeper flavors.
