Our experience at Top of the Citi by Chef Jessie

Makati City is no doubt one of the most attractive cities in the Philippines. Bustling with business during the day, it transforms into a laid-back cosmopolitan district at night. And what better way to enjoy the Makati cityscape during the night, with its tall illuminated skyscrapers, than to behold it from a lofty view.

This is exactly what Top of the Citi by Chef Jessie wants you to experience, Makati's other side, its unseen facet beyond the flurry of office space. For those who are unacquainted, Top of the Citi by Chef Jessie is one of the fine dining restaurants located in the heart of Makati City, specifically on the 34th floor of Citibank Tower.

What to expect at Top of the Citi by Chef Jessie

Top of the Citi by Chef Jessie is a restaurant most often reserved for business lunches, cocktail parties, and functions, rather than, say, impromptu dinner dates. On the other hand, if you want to impress a special someone, then, by all means, book a table at Top of the City by Chef Jessie.

At night, the bar gets rather busy when patrons wind down for a few drinks after a busy day at work. The terrace is more recommended for you if you want a stunning 360-degree view of the Makati skyline at night.

On one very rare occasion, we felt rather ostentatious and convinced some of our friends to try out Top of the Citi by Chef Jessie.

It's strictly by reservation so we booked a table a few days before. Upon entering, you would immediately notice that it's the typical fine-dining restaurant. The lights are dim, the music is soft, the servers are more formal, and the tables are spaced wide apart.

Surprisingly, I did not feel out of place but that's because nobody looked at me, anyway. We proceeded to our table near the terrace and we were handed copies of the menu.

    What we ordered

We ordered Top of the Citi by Chef Jessie's dinner set menu for the evening composed of Kale and Mesclun Greens Salad, Cream of Broccoli and Asparagus Soup, Mango Sorbet, Roast US Beef Tenderloin, Blackened Tuna Fillet, and Caramelized Profiteroles. The food sounded fancy, no doubt.

    Kale and Mesclun Greens Salad

The Kale and Mesclun Greens Salad was brought out first. It was fresh but I couldn't fully enjoy it because the kale had a strong, bitter aftertaste. It was well-dressed but the taste of the kale was really pronounced.

The Cream of Broccoli and Asparagus Soup came next. It tasted creamy and was velvety smooth but it was a little bland. I didn't want to add salt; I don't know why. Maybe because this soup was made that way so I tried my best to enjoy it as it is.

In preparation for the main course, the Mango Sorbet was served. It was not a dessert but rather it was meant to balance out the taste and cleanse the palate so that we can fully enjoy the main course.

The Mango Sorbet was a cute scoop of what looked like shaved frozen mango juice. It was successful in cleansing my taste buds, anyway.

The main course is a plate of Beef Tenderloin in Wild Mushroom Sauce, and Blackened Tuna Fillet, paired with potatoes and steamed vegetables.

I really like this main course. The beef was packed with flavor and was very tender; cooked just right so it easily yielded to every stroke of my knife. The same goes for the tuna fillet, it was scrumptious, flavorful, and juicy.

To cap our meal, our dessert was served. It was the Caramelized Profiteroles which looked like cute little puffs coated with melted sugar. It was also delicious with just the right amount of sweetness. It was a great conclusion to our meal at Top of the City by Chef Jessie.

    Our verdict

Top of the Citi by Chef Jessie is like any other fine-dining restaurants in the metro. It had a good ambiance, which is possibly its strongest character. The service was also commendable.

But what can I say about our meal? The mains were delicious but I could use another helping of the beef tenderloin. Anyway, that's how it is in first-class restaurants, you get small portions only.

The rest of the food was similar to the usual hotel food which I found a little bland. There really nothing wrong with it, I think that's really how food in these types of restaurants is prepared.

It's just that my Pinoy palate was looking for something punchier. Oh well, at least I got to try fine dining and felt like a millionaire even just for a brief moment.

Top of the Citi by Chef Jessie is located at 8741 Paseo de Roxas, Makati. If you want to make reservations, you may call (02) 7750 5810.

    4. top of the City by Chef Jessie is nice to have intimate/romantic dinners (that is, if you eat little. well that is fine dining). but aside from the food, the main attraction would be the scenery especially at evening, where you can see the other image of the Makati skylines. if you have money to spend then maybe it is worth a try just for the experience
