The five-star EDSA Shangri-La Hotel is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the Mandaluyong City skyline. The first-ever Shangri-La hotel in the Philippines, it began to welcome guests in 1992 and built its reputation throughout the years as the hotel of choice for business travelers. Wonderful Family Weekends At The EDSA Shangri-La Hotel

Our experience at the EDSA Shangri-La Hotel

We were invited by my sister-in-law for a weekend staycation at the EDSA Shangri-La Hotel. Khris and I were still quite excited with the prospect even if that would be our second time to stay in this hotel.

As with all other Shangri-La properties, the EDSA Shangri-La Hotel boasts of a magnificent grand lobby with a high ceiling and glass walls that allow natural light to flood the vastness of the hall.

    The hotel's milestones

If you look anywhere, there is no doubt that each corner spells luxury yet, surprisingly, the EDSA Shangri-La still manages to look inviting and relaxed. Perhaps that is the magic that keeps patrons coming back to its comforts for a sweet escape from the everyday pressures of life.

When we arrived here, the EDSA Shangri-La Hotel was celebrating its 25th Anniversary. We were lucky because there was a photo exhibit at the lobby about the hotel's milestones, from the time of its groundbreaking to its construction, and to its eventual opening.

On display were pictures of the old hotel signage, old employee handbooks, training passports, and the swimming pool. We did enjoy walking back through the hotel's rich history.

    Our home away from home

The two occasions that gave us the opportunity to enjoy the luxury of the EDSA Shangri-La were both to celebrate birthdays.

We always stayed in the Deluxe family room at the Garden Wing, in which all rooms offer a relaxing view of either the tropical garden or the Mandaluyong cityscape.

If you choose to lazily spend your day inside your room, the bed is definitely, a comfortable spot as you watch cable TV shows on a 24-inch LCD screen.

As can b expected, high-speed Wi-Fi is also complimentary, so you can easily update or be updated by your social media channels any time you want to.

On the other hand, standard bath amenities and toiletries are available in the hotel’s large and modern bathrooms. For a much-deserved me-time, you can soak up in the bathtub, and enjoy the relaxing green tea scent of the complimentary bath products.

Lunch at the EDSA Shangri-La Hotel's Heat Restaurant

The EDSA Shangri-La’s Heat Restaurant prides itself in its open-theater kitchens, featuring international cuisines meticulously prepared by world-renowned chefs. The restaurant offers a nice view of the gardens and pool area while you enjoy your food.

It can seat 426 people but it does not get too crowded; diners can comfortably move around and enjoy their meals without worrying that they will nudge another person at the next table or bump into another guest while they get a slice of steak.

    Carving station

As usual, we being our culinary adventure at the Heat Restaurant by visiting the carving station, always a must-visit in any hotel. That time, the featured meat was a huge chunk of rib eye that was gloriously displayed.

You can have the steak medium rare, which was how it was usually prepared. However, we prefer our steak cooked medium to medium well. We smothered it with red wine sauce and paired it with Yorkshire pudding for a satisfying meat lover's plate.

    Seafood station

Another station that is always busy is the seafood station which had steamed crabs, shrimps, and mussels that were displayed over ice.

These can be consumed as they are with a dash of sauce but you can still ask the chefs to cook your seafood in garlic and butter if you prefer to eat it warm.

Bread, cheeses, and cold cuts station

If you love to begin your meal with cheese and cold cuts like I do, then you can choose from various kinds of cheese and cured meats in this station.

    Salad station

what I like about this station is the freshness of the vegetables, the variety of available dressings, as well as the many toppings that diners can choose from. I usually skip the salad in buffet restaurants but it's just nice to know that the ingredients that they use here are of high quality.

    Filipino food station

The Filipino food station features local dishes such as kare-kare, lechon kawali, vegetables, and a host of other local items. I really like it when buffet restaurants feature Filipino food which I never fail to try.

    Japanese food station

If you love Japanese food, there is a good assortment of sushi, sashimi, and California maki at the Heat Restaurant. The seafood was a delight to eat because they were fresh.

    Dessert station

The dessert station, meanwhile, is a generous spread of native sweets and cakes, ice cream of various flavors, pastries, churros con chocolate, fondue, and fresh fruits.

    The swimming pool

The EDSA Shangri-La’s pool area is surrounded by a flourishing tropical garden. The outdoor pool is part of the hotel’s Health Club, a premier fitness club that aims to build a lifestyle that revolves around holistic wellness under the supervision of internationally-certified wellness coaches.

The swimming pool is divided into several zones, the kiddie area being the shallowest. Its deepest portion is around 9 feet deep. Aside from a relaxing dip, the pool is also perfect for aqua fitness and conditioning exercises.

We didn't let the opportunity pass and swam in the pool. The water was a bit cold but it was okay. There were lifeguards on duty and it was easy to request towels. It was really the kids who enjoyed the swimming pool and the slide. They would pretend that they could not hear us no matter how loud we called them.
