More than a decade ago, when Mommy Khris and I were scouting for the most
beautiful wedding churches in Metro Manila, the name St. Alphonsus Mary de
Liguori Parish Church kept popping up in many wedding organizers’ blogs. It
was our top choice back then. However, due to the unavailability of our
preferred wedding date and the church’s accessibility to our visitors, we
opted for another equally magnificent church (but that’s for another
story).
About the church
The St. Alphonsus Mary de Liguori Parish Church is a fairly new building,
having been built in 1968 and designed by national artist for architecture Leandro Locsin. It was engulfed by a fire and was eventually redesigned and rebuilt by Architect Dominic Galicia. The main feature of the church is the several arches framing the facade of the church.
Despite the newness of the church, it’s still often praised by
parishioners and even passersby driving through South Luzon Expressway for its unique and interesting architecture. This design, in fact, is
intentional to allow maximum use of natural light.
The church was named in honor of St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori. He was a
multi-talented Italian Catholic bishop who was also known as a spiritual
writer, composer, musician, artist, poet, lawyer, scholastic philosopher, and
theologian. He also founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, known
as the Redemptorists, in November 1732.
St. Alphonsus was canonized in 1839 by Pope Gregory XVI and proclaimed a
Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius IX in 1871. A frequently cited Catholic
author, he is the patron saint of confessors
Attending a wedding at St. Alphonsus Mary de Liguori Parish Church
Back in 2019, we were led back to this church when we attended a former
colleague’s wedding at St. Alphonsus Mary de Liguori Parish Church. The
interior is even more stunning with its modern design and layout. Its location
is also advantageous because it’s away from the main highway, making it
conducive to meditation and prayer. The interiors are very quiet, bright, and
spacious.
During the ceremony, I can’t help but remark how good the sound system was. It
made our friend’s wedding even more memorable and solemn.
Final Thoughts
All in all, the St. Alphonsus Mary de Liguori Parish Church is a charming and
solemn church in Magallanes Village in Makati City. If you are looking for a
beautiful church for your wedding and baptism, I’m sure you’d find a lot of
recommendations for the St. Alphonsus Mary de Liguori Parish Church.
