Discover the emotional, ever-changing first year of parenthood: full of growth, sleepless nights, milestones, and learning to trust your instincts.
When you become a parent, it can be a first year where you feel completely exhausted. You are full of wonder, and you are also learning while you are doing the most important job. You are discovering who you are and who your baby is, and every single week is going to feel completely different. You are never going to have one day that feels the same. You may be celebrating a first smile, but the next day, you're going to be thinking about when your baby is going to eventually start sleeping through the night.
It's a very emotional time, one that moves very quickly but sometimes can feel endless in the moment. The good news, though, is that every parent learns by doing, so the more that you understand about your baby's stages and needs, the easier it becomes for you to handle the changes with some confidence.
The Early Stages: From Newborn to Infant
Before you start jumping into any routines or building habits that you want to last, it's important to make sure that you understand what each stage means for you. Parents often ask, “Exactly how old is an infant?” and it can be a difficult question to think about. When does your newborn become an infant, and why is it important?
Generally, a baby is considered a newborn from birth to around two months old; after that, they are usually referred to as an infant until they get their first birthday. Once they pass the one-year mark, they then start to become a toddler, which covers the ages when walking and early talking begin.
Knowing how old an infant is helps to make sense of your baby's development and the milestones they're supposed to be hitting. You will know what to expect physically and emotionally by being able to look at things properly.
Infants usually gain more head control and start to roll over, as well as showing a little bit more curiosity about the world.
The Learning Curve of Early Parenthood
Parenthood will not usually look like the calm, smiling scenes that you see in books or in movies. It is rewarding, but it's also important for you to know that it's hard work. The nights can be very long, and your baby's needs change before you have even adjusted to the phase that they are in.
Still, there is a good little rhythm that is beneath all of the madness and chaos. Babies thrive after having repetition, so having a good routine in place for feeding, sleeping, playing, and cuddling is a good idea. That does not mean that you need to have a strict schedule in place, though; it's more of a little bit of a pattern that helps with your and your baby's growth.
Some weeks, naps might be really smooth and predictable, but other weeks, they may be absolute chaos. Being little spirits, having teeth growing or growth spurts can also disrupt everything, so try to be patient and be flexible as much as possible.
Creating Comfort Around Sleep
Sleep is one of the biggest challenges for new parents. You will hear many different options and opinions about how much your baby should be sleeping or when they should be sleeping through the night, but there is no normal way that every baby's sleep journey looks the same; they're all going to be different.
What helps most is creating the perfect sleep environment for your little one. That means you need to set them up in a space where they can feel calm and have a consistent environment that is safe. Babies sleep best in a quiet, dark room with a comfortable temperature.
A white noise machine is also a brilliant way to comfort your little one and can help mask background sounds. Using a firm mattress and a fitted sheet can help ensure that your sleeping environment is safe.
Avoid soft bedding, pillows, or stuffed animals, especially in the first year, as this can be dangerous. It may take a little time to find what works for your baby, but the effort definitely pays off.
The right environment helps your baby sleep longer and more peacefully, meaning that you will also get to have more sleep and a more peaceful sleep too.
Why Understanding Development Helps
When you understand the stage that your baby is at, you can adjust things like your approach. Infants are constantly changing physically, emotionally, and neurologically, so you need to make sure that you are changing too.
For example, during the first six months of your baby's life, their vision gets sharper, their muscles strengthen, and they start to recognize familiar faces. Around the same time, you will find that their sleep cycles lengthen, which means that they will get longer stretches of sleep at night.
If you know that your infant is going to be entering a new phase of growing or learning, then it's much easier for you to stay calm and adjust when things change.
Understanding how your baby develops does not make things perfect, but it does provide context to any mishaps that might be happening and reassures you that it’s going to be temporary.
Taking Care of Yourself Too
It is very easy to forget about your own well-being, but this hasn't impacted your baby either. Exhaustion makes everything harder, from decision-making to being patient.
When possible, try to share nighttime duties with a partner or a trusted family member. Even taking a few short naps during the day can make a huge difference. If you can, take a few minutes each day for yourself, having a shower without rushing through it, going for a short walk, or simply having quiet time with no baby monitor for a few minutes while somebody else watches over them can help you reset and come back much calmer and feeling refreshed.
Parenting is about showing up even when you're tired, but you need to know this phase will pass.
The Big Picture
Your baby's first year is a time of incredible growth for you and your baby, so there are many things for you to learn and many changes for you to expect.
More than anything, you need to remember that parenting is never about being perfect; it's all about making a connection with your little one. Although the early days can feel long, they're going to be full of moments that you're going to remember forever.
