The Silence Movie Review [Netflix]

When I saw clips of the movie “The Silence (2019)” on TikTok, I was intrigued, so I had to find out if it was on Netflix. Luckily, it was on Netflix, so I lined it up in my “horror movies to watch” list. However, it was not of the paranormal kind of horror; it was more of a sci-fi/suspense movie. While watching it, I couldn’t help but be reminded of the movie “Pitch Black” (released year 2000, starring Vin Diesel).

The Silence Movie Review [Netflix]

Movie Plot

The movie starts with a group of scientists exploring a cave, who then accidentally discovers a new species of flying creatures called “vesps.” These creatures are blind but have super-sharp hearing, and they attack anything that makes noise. After escaping the cave, they start attacking busy places where there are loud noises (such as highly populated cities), causing chaos across the whole country.

Ally, a teenage girl who lost her hearing in a car accident, lives with her family. When the vesp outbreak begins, the government tells everyone to stay quiet and indoors. Ally’s family decides to leave the city and head to the countryside, hoping it will be safer for them. They travel with her dad, Hugh’s best friend, Glenn, but things go wrong when a herd of deer distracts Glenn, causing his car to crash into a roadside cliff. Glenn sacrifices himself to save the family from the vesps.

The family finds a house to hide in, but it is not easy. Lynn (Ally’s grandma) kept having asthma attacks, and they had to deal with dangerous situations like a close encounter with a rattlesnake, and Ally’s mother getting bitten on the leg by a vesp. Eventually, they manage to survive and settle in the house.

Later, the family learns about strange cults forming. One cult, led by a tongueless reverend, wants to take Ally. They trick the family and kidnap her, but Grandma Lynn bravely sacrifices herself to save Ally. The family fights back and defeats the cult.

Ultimately, they travel north, where it was colder—vesps can’t survive in the cold. They reunite with Rob (Ally’s boyfriend) and start hunting vesps with bows and arrows. Ally wonders if the vesps will adapt to the cold, and if people will learn to live in silence like she did.

My thoughts about The Silence

All in all, I found the movie to be enjoyable to watch. Several moments kept me on the edge of my seat; it was an action-packed movie that horror fans will also enjoy. Just the same, I think the ending can be improved because I felt it was open-ended.
