Wordless Wednesday: Sts. Peter and Paul Church (Bantayan Island)

We had the chance to visit Sts. Peter and Paul Church during our trip to Bantayan Island in 2017. It’s located in Bantayan town, in front of the public plaza.

We’ve read many good things about it and we were not disappointed when we saw it for ourselves. It was a small church, just the way we like it because it made praying more solemn. Having said that, I wouldn’t consider it grand. Its beauty exudes from its quaintness and somewhat rugged allure.

The Sts. Peter and Paul Church is made of coral stones, a construction material that we rarely hear of although they are fairly common in coastal towns.

The entrance of the church features doors within doors made of heavy wood. On each side of the door, there are stone statues that stand as sentinels that seem to protect the church from raiders and intruders.

As you enter, you would notice that the interiors of the church look airy and well-illuminated. Meanwhile, the windows of Sts. Peter and Paul Church are made of stained glass, the colors of which stand out in contrast to the off-white color of the stone walls.

Inside the Sts. Peter and Paul Church

There are statues inside Sts. Peter and Paul Church which are believed to be centuries-old. The church is also home to a museum but visitors need to set an appointment if they wish to see the artifacts displayed inside it.

In terms of the history of the Sts. Peter and Paul Church, it was constructed by Augustinian friars in honor of the Nuestra Senora de la Asuncion (Our Lady of the Assumption). The original church was destroyed by invaders in 1600 but it was reconstructed starting in 1839.
