The Unbreakable Bond

March 12, 2022

As a dad, I'm happy with the thought that I've created an unbreakable bond with my two children.

I’ve always believed that kids are bound to have a favorite parent. I’ve observed that in my own children and I guess other fathers also share the same sentiments as I am. My younger son Rafa has always been closer to his mother. When he was just a few months old, he’d always want to be held by his mom. I couldn’t think of a reason why except that it’s just the way things are. Just the same, I still did my best to win his heart, so to speak.

Now that he’s already two years old, he still prefers to be beside his mom, especially at night when it’s time for bed. Lately, though, he’s been letting me carry him and lull him to sleep without any resistance. I’ve also realized lately that we were even able to create our own bonding moments, so to speak, and I’m already contented with that.

Every afternoon, Rafa would ask me to carry him to the gate so that he could observe the vroom vrooms passing by. He’s only been outside on very few occasions because of the COVID-19 pandemic and I can see that he’s happy just to be outside our gate and watch the cars and the people walking outside.

There were instances when he would even wave and say “hi” to the other kids that he saw.

Anyway, I’m just so proud of my little boy because he’s growing up smart and active. He could be naughty at times but there are also many occasions when he is nothing but sweet. When Rafa saw that his cousin was crying, he stroked her back. When his Kuya tripped and fell on his knees, Rafa stomped on the spot where his brother tumbled.

Rafa is a very curious boy. So curious that he’d be high up in places where he shouldn’t be. I think that’s typical of any toddler his age, as such, we just have to be alert and keenly observant when he is playing. I do admit though that I sometimes get impatient with him when I try to dissuade him from doing things that might hurt him. He’d sometimes cry when I shout but I do try to make it up to him.

He still loves balloons and would always try to inflate one when he finds it among his toys. He also loves to swim and be in the water. I hope I can take him to the beach one day; I’m sure he’ll love it too, just like his Kuya.

I hope Rafa doesn’t grow up too fast though and also his Kuya Miguel. I know that’s inevitable that’s why I always remind myself that the day will come when they’d have their own world outside us.

Until then, I’d cherish our playtime and our being together at home because of this pandemic. I know that I’m still not Rafa’s most favorite person on earth. That’s completely fine with me because that person happens to be his mother.

Nevertheless, I also know that we have our own unbreakable bond and that thought makes me happy.

  1. This is a great article. Are you going to keep an online journal of him as he grows up. That would be pretty cool.
