Here are some of the important facts that you need to know about the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.

The Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Puerto Princesa is probably one of the grandest and most breathtaking Roman Catholic religious edifices in the city, if not in the whole of Palawan. Located along Rizal Avenue and across Plaza Cuartel at Puerto Princesa City, Palawan, the Immaculate Conception Cathedral can easily be reached via tricycle from anywhere in the city.

A stopover at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral is also part of most Puerto Princesa city packaged tours so you may just want to get a group tour, especially if you are also planning to visit the most well-known tourist sites of Puerto Princesa. In fact, this is what we did in 2016 when we availed of the city familiarization tour and I highly recommend this if you want to save on time.

Of course, if you want to spend some leisurely time at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral and perhaps hear Mass, then it is most advisable that you allot a dedicated schedule just for that purpose.

A Brief History of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral

The church’s history could be traced back to 1872 when Spanish missionaries celebrated Puerto Princesa City’s very first Mass in the location where the cathedral presently stands. The church was subsequently constructed and was completed after almost a century. It was named after Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, the patroness of Puerto Princesa City.

Top 5 things to like about the Immaculate Conception Cathedral

I personally like visiting churches. Beyond religion, exploring churches is akin to walking back in time. It can also be an opportunity, call it an educational sojourn, in which one may appreciate art, culture, heritage, and architecture. A visit to the Immaculate Conception Cathedral is no different.

One look at a photo of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral is enough to convince any traveler to include it in their Puerto Princesa itinerary. Nonetheless, I have still listed here the top 5 things to like about the Immaculate Conception Cathedral:

    1. The cathedral looks stunning

The Immaculate Conception Cathedral is very reminiscent of European architecture with its high, pointed bell towers. The church also features cavernous interiors with its high ceiling as well as high-arched doorways. Another stunning feature of the church is the intricately designed alter which also houses the centuries-old statue of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception.

On another note, the façade of the church is regularly touched up with fresh paint. This is to ensure that the building is well-kept and preserved. Having said that, travelers must be cautioned that they cannot expect Immaculate Conception Cathedral’s exteriors to be antique-looking when they do visit it. But just the same, the antique structures and details are still much evident from the outside.

    2. The cathedral offers a peaceful respite to travelers

    4. The cathedral is easily accessible to travelers

As I had mentioned above, the church is easily accessible. If you are already in the city center, you may hire a tricycle driver to take you to Immaculate Conception Cathedral. If you are coming from the airport, you may ask a cab to take you to the church.

    5. A visit here will give visitors a peek into the past

It will not directly provide information as a book or manuscript would. However, if you care to locate and read the church's marker, you would already have a good grasp of its history as well as the personalities behind its rich historical background.

The knowledge that you have gained will hopefully inspire you to dig deeper through research and by talking to locals.
