We used to pass by St. Peter Parish: Shrine of Leaders along Commonwealth
Avenue on our way home to Novaliches. Back then, I always wondered why so
many people went there to attend Mass or just to pay a visit. I thought it
was quite inaccessible given that it was along a super busy highway. We
finally knew the reason why when we visited the church for ourselves to do
an ocular for our son’s christening. It was solemn and breathtaking; as
such, without a second thought, we booked it for Miguel’s baptism.
About St. Peter Parish Church: Shrine of Leaders
Dedicated to forming leaders who are God-centered and committed to serving
humanity. Through its spiritual, pastoral, and social programs, it serves as a
center for evangelization, service, and the development of leadership grounded
in Christian values.
The church is dedicated to St. Peter the Apostle (the façade of the church is
reminiscent of St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City). The parish was
established on June 29, 1975, under the Diocese of Novaliches (before the
Diocese of Novaliches was created, it belonged to the Archdiocese of Manila).
The current church building was constructed over several years beginning in
the early to late 1990s, replacing the earlier, simpler parish church as the
congregation grew.
It later became known as the St. Peter Parish: Shrine of Leaders, reflecting
its special ministry of praying for and forming leaders in government,
business, education, and other sectors.
Our son’s baptism
We initially thought that baptism was conducted inside the church (similar to
other churches). However, we found out later on that the actual ceremony would
be conducted in the baptistry. It was fine with us because the baptistry was
solemn.
In fact, it was an even better venue since there were no distractions that may
come from other churchgoers. Also, right before the ceremony, we were able to
explore the garden, which we later found out was part of the columbarium (I
didn’t stay long in the garden because I thought it was too eerily silent).
We chose a special baptism or solo baptism versus the regular baptism or mass
baptism, which was held every Sunday only. St. Peter Parish Church also
requires parents to personally register their child for baptism.
For a special baptism, we had to make a donation of Php2,050, inclusive of
five pairs of sponsors. If you have more than 10 sponsors, you have to pay an
additional Php50 per extra sponsor. We were also required to be there on time
(of course), or else our slot would be forfeited.
Final Thoughts
Looking back, choosing St. Peter Parish: Shrine of Leaders for Miguel's
baptism turned out to be one of the best decisions we made as a family. What
started as simple curiosity whenever we passed by Commonwealth Avenue
eventually became a meaningful milestone in our lives.
Beyond its impressive architecture, the church offers a peaceful atmosphere
that encourages prayer and reflection despite being located along one of Metro
Manila's busiest roads. The dedicated baptistry also made the sacrament feel
more intimate, allowing us to focus on celebrating this important occasion
with our family and closest friends.
