Grateful Dad #12: Late Night Snacking

February 24, 2022

I've found healthier snack options for my late night snacking habits that I couldn't seem to control.

Over the last few months, I’ve been snacking late in the evening almost every night. Sometimes I do get hungry because I only eat a small amount of rice at dinner. Oftentimes though, I just felt like munching on something which can be anything from crackers, to peanuts, and then chips.

Grateful for healthy late night snacks

Grateful Dad #12: Late Night Snacking

When I was younger, I could afford to eat chips and junk food but I tried my best to curb unhealthy late night snacking especially when I began to approach 40. I was able to ditch that habit but lately I just felt like popping food into my mouth when I was reading something or watching videos.

Anyway, to lessen the guilt, I turned to unsalted roasted nuts and seeds. We bought raw walnuts and sliced almonds from a supplier in Shopee about two years ago. However, the products are quite pricey so we searched for another seller.

Nuts and seeds from Shopee for late night snacks

Luckily, we found a supplier that sold almonds, cashew nuts, sunflower seeds, and pistachios at a more affordable price. There are raw options and roasted options available in the store so you can buy nuts depending on your needs.

Initially, we bought small bags of almonds, cashew nuts, and pistachios. We were impressed by the packaging of the products. They were in vacuum sealed plastic bags to guarantee freshness. True enough, the nuts were crunchy, tasty, and fresh.

After finishing off the first batch of nuts that we bought, we purchased one kilo bags of almonds, cashew nuts, pistachios, and sunflower seeds. All of these were already roasted but only the pistachios were salted. Now, whenever we feel the craving to snack throughout the day, I just get a bowl of these nuts and seeds and munch on them.

At night, I still couldn’t restrain myself from eating (even if I ate dinner) but with these unsalted nuts, the guilt is not that strong. In fact, these nuts are full of health-giving nutrients so that’s nothing to feel bad about.

For example, almonds are rich in healthy fats, fiber, protein, magnesium, and Vitamin E. Almonds can also help lower blood sugar levels, reduce blood pressure and bring down cholesterol levels. They can also reduce hunger and promote weight loss, so that’s another boon.

Pistachios are the same, they are high in healthy oils, fiber, and protein for keeping the cardiovascular system in top condition.

Meanwhile, sunflower seeds have vitamin E, flavonoids, and other plant compounds that can also help reduce inflammation in the body.

Not only that, sunflower seeds are also rich in healthy fats like polyunsaturated fat and monounsaturated fat. These healthy fats can lead to lower incidence of cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. In terms of helping boost immunity, sunflower seeds contain both zinc and selenium.

Lastly, cashews have low sugar content yet rich in fiber, heart-healthy fats, and plant protein. Cashew nuts are also a good source of copper, magnesium, and manganese; these are nutrients that promote energy production, brain health, immunity, and bone health.

Anyway, if you’d also like to order healthy almonds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and cashews, you can visit this Shopee shop.

How about you, are you also guilty of late night snacking? What do you like to eat?
