Taiwan remains visa-free for Filipinos until July 2024

This is good news if, like us, you have delayed your plans to go to this popular Asian destination, then you have a full year to finally bring that plan to reality.

Originally, Filipinos were given a trial period of nine months or from November 2017 to July 2018. During that period, Filipinos are allowed to stay in Taiwan with no visa for 14 days.

Taiwan aims to attract more visitors from nations included in what it calls its “New Southbound Policy,” specifically those from 10 Southeast Asian countries, 6 South Asian countries, Australia, and New Zealand, which is why it has extended its visa-free program.

This policy was also put in place to offset the decrease in visitors from Mainland China because of the transition in leadership. Since launching its visa-free program, Taiwan has enjoyed an increase in tourist influx from countries included in its New Southbound Policy.

A report by The China Post said that Filipinos visiting Taiwan grew from 172,475 in 2016 to 290,784 in 2017 following the enactment of the visa-free policy.

Aside from Filipinos, travelers from Thailand and Brunei may also stay in Taiwan visa-free for 14 days. Tourists from Thailand grew by around 100,000 from 2016 to 2017.

Meanwhile, Malaysians and Singaporeans may enjoy a longer stay in Taiwan without a visa as they have a full 30-day grant. Lastly, New Zealanders and Australians may stay in Taiwan without a visa for 90 days.

3 Top Things to do in Taiwan

The Taiwan Tourism Bureau website lists a host of activities that travelers can do in Taiwan.

1. Yushan or Jade Mountian

If one wishes to see the natural wonders of Taiwan, there are towering mountains that offer scenic views of the landscape.

Taiwan is home to the Yushan or Jade Mountain, Northeast Asia’s highest peak at around 4,000 meters high. Aside from peaks, one may include in their itinerary a visit to any of the beautiful coastlines of Taiwan.

2. Taiwan's festivals

For a dose of culture, there are festivals throughout the year in Taiwan. Some of the upcoming Festivals are the 2018 Taiwan Cycling Festival, Tibetan Culture, and Art Festival, The Most Beautiful Bays in Penghu, the NPM Asian Art Festival, Sanyi International Woodcarving Art Festival, Yunlin International Puppets Arts Festival, and the Taichung World Flora Exposition, just to name some.

3. Taiwanese food

For a gastronomic feast, Taiwanese cuisine can be had in many restaurants and street-side stalls at any time of the day.

Some of the must-try dishes are the oyster omelet, stinky tofu, Taiwanese meatballs, shrimp pork soup, and Danzai noodles. Of course, there are countless other dishes to discover so make it your next goal to try something new when you do visit Taiwan.

How about you? Are you planning to visit Taiwan soon? What do you look forward to on your trip?
