It was our last day in Puerto Princesa City. We were at Dos Palmas Island Resort & Spa to cap our week-long holiday in celebration of our second wedding anniversary.

We quietly sat on the beach as we waited for the sun to set. It was, for us, the best activity to conclude the day. We marveled at how peaceful the beach was in this side of Palawan.

We watched in awe as the sun began to descend over the horizon, and as the sky was painted a hue of red and orange.

In that moment of peace, I realized our breaths were slow and deep. It was like we were dreaming. We were lucky to behold one of nature’s most wondrous sights.

When the sun, now a mere orange speck, finally disappeared over the horizon, the darkness of the night began to envelope the island. As we were jolted back to reality, we realized how lucky we were in being able to find contentment in the simplest of things.

More than two reasons to love Dos Palmas

Dos Palmas may have earned notoriety when it made headlines as it bore witness to two unfortunate events: first was the untimely demise of matinee idol Rico Yan and second was the Abu Sayyaf kidnapping incident. Both of which happened just a year apart.

But beyond these two unfortunate events, we felt that there is more to love about Dos Palmas. As such, we decided to spend the last leg of our Puerto Princes adventure in this island resort.

Dos Palmas is one of the islands dotting Honda Bay. It was beautiful; it spells luxury with a very easygoing vibe.

Immediately upon arrival, we were given a brief about the resort. It is here where we learned that the island, powered only by generators, observes total power and water shut down from 10am to 11am every day in order to conserve energy.

What’s to love more about Dos Palmas is that it offers complimentary tour to the beautiful Isla Puting Buhangin, free snorkeling and unlimited use of the kayaks (life vest and aqua shoes included). Day tours are offered as well if an overnight stay is not feasible.

We were not able to check in early, hence, we immediately availed of the tour to Isla Puting Buhangin. The island is a sandbar, very raw with just 2 cottages. The sand was very white, almost as fine as Boracay’s.

Since it is in the middle of Honda Bay, strong waves are to be expected. The surrounding water was incredibly a deep turquoise. Much of the island is submerged in water during high tide but during low tide, one may walk along the long sandbar and enjoy a good view of the clear water.

From Isla Puting Buhangin, we had a leisurely lunch at the restaurant. Immediately after, we went snorkeling in an area that was directly over a reef. It was home to colorful fishes and corals. You may bring a piece of bread with you in order to lure the fishes near you.

While vacations are meant to be unhurried, still, one would never run out of things to do in Dos Palmas. Spend a day walking around the island to get to know it better. If you want to cool down, you may choose to either take a dip in the swimming pool or in the beach.

There is also a swimming pool at the spa area for those who want a more private venue to swim in. After which, one may indulge in a relaxing Swedish massage in the hands of a well-trained therapist.

There is no night life in Dos Palmas so expect to be enveloped in a lot of peace and quiet during your stay.

Old-looking but well-maintained rooms

We booked in one of the Beach Villas, located immediately at the beach front. It is undeniable that Dos Palmas’ rooms are old but these are well-maintained. It gave the air of an antique beach house.

It had a standard queen-sized bed, cabinets, and a personal ref. It opened to a verandah which gave a view of a mangrove patch and the beach. The bathroom also had all the standard amenities, including hot and cold shower. Water is slightly salty making it hard to wash off soap.

Since the island uses generators, don’t expect the air conditioning to be freezing cold but it’s just enough to give the room a cool breeze.

Conclusion

We didn’t regret in any bit our stay in Dos Palmas. It was one of the best resorts that we have ever been at. Our experience in Dos Palmas is comparable to our stay in Costa Pacifica – the rooms, the quiet evenings, the affordable food and the hospitable staff. Dos Palmas is definitely worth a visit when in Puerto Princesa City.
