Becoming a doctor or a lawyer, starting a business, working as an artisan or freelancer – it’s hard to know which path to take. Sitting down with a teen or young adult and going through the options is very important, as they need to find the balance between having a meaningful and fulfilling life and being able to support themselves financially and practically. They also need to ensure that there are jobs in the field they wish to enter.

One area in which there are a growing number of jobs is in the STEM sector. But while many people see STEM subjects as boring, the way they are taught can hugely influence this idea. Children who have been introduced to STEM subjects in a fun way, such as with exciting science experiments are more likely to pursue a career in this field.

The journey from childhood to adulthood is a complex one and can be overwhelming too. It’s hard to strike the right balance between letting children be children and preparing them for life beyond school and college, but that’s what needs to be done. Listening to and engaging with youngsters is the best way of supporting them as they move from learning to the working world. Every individual has the potential to succeed with genuine encouragement.
