Grateful Dad #6: Cameras and Photography

February 04, 2022

In this edition of Grateful Dad, I recall my love for cameras as well as photography as a hobby.

In the not-so-distant past, I considered myself as an aspiring photographer more than a blogger. I love photography and my gadget-of-choice is a camera. Back then, I took photos and shared them on my blog. I didn’t write stories and supported them with photographs; I posted pictures and supported them with a short story.

Grateful Dad #6: Cameras and Photography

Don’t get me wrong, I already loved to write back then but I wasn’t as polished as I am now. It’s no secret that I started this blog to hone my writing skills. I’m not a journalism or communications graduate and, being in the field of marketing, I felt that I needed to be able to diversify my writing style.

What I meant is I could write press releases but that was the only style I knew back then. I wanted to be able to write more lifestyle or feature stories instead of just news items.

Anyway, with photography, it was something else. I felt that I could tell a more meaningful story with a single image. I felt that I had more control over it as compared to my budding writing skills. As such, I invested in cameras. Never mind if I were using a lousy phone. I felt that I had the power if I carried a good camera with me.

I even told a friend that I would never post anything on social media that is taken with a phone camera. I only posted photos taken by a proper camera.

I had a Sony Cybershot point and shoot that my mother gave to me. I took so many good photos with it until it finally gave up. I used it for my usual Friday hangouts with friends, during company events, and even on ordinary days. I kept it handy in my bag as I waited for the perfect subject to shoot. I felt like a pro photographer!

After that Sony Cybershot, I got myself a used Canon 300D because I felt like leveling up my skills. I played around with the manual settings of my Canon 300D and eventually got to learn all the basic principles and terms used in advanced photography.

Somewhere along the way, I dreamed of becoming a travel photographer and going on an adventure around the world. I don’t know why I didn’t pursue it but I think I might’ve gotten self-critical again and told myself that I cannot do it.

I had the Canon 300D for around three years. However, since it was an old and used camera, it soon showed signs of wear and tear.

That’s when I decided to purchase a compact advanced point and shoot camera, a Nikon CoolPix P340. This one is my favorite because it was able to merge advanced camera settings and a compact form factor. I could easily bring it anywhere and shoot photos to my heart’s content.

That Nikon CoolPix P340 had been my trusty camera for most of my travels. I was also very interested in food photography, long before Instagram became a thing. I used to post food photos on Multiply, Tumblr, and Flickr, while my travel photos went into this blog.

I had the Nikon CoolPix P340 with me for close to eight years, I think, until some quirks began to show. Eventually, the screen just showed an error message when I turned it on. That’s when I decided that it has served its purpose.

Anyway, mobile phone cameras have come a long way so I use mostly my phone's camera to take photos these days. Just the same, I still would want to buy a good camera when I finally have the budget for it. I have to prioritize my family first. Ah, the joys of adulthood.

To close, I’d just like to share some seriously delicious food shots of this brie cheese from a brand called “President.” It’s really good, creamy, and a little chewy. We love to eat this as a dessert that we enjoy after dinner.

I wish we could always enjoy this brie cheese all the time but it was only available in the supermarket. I mean, it wasn’t available for grocery delivery.
